Fragrance, Flavour & Function for Every Garden

Herbs are among the most rewarding plants you can grow, beautiful, fragrant, and incredibly useful, they bring life to gardens, patios, and even kitchen windowsills. At Root One, we offer a wide selection of high-quality herb plants, seeds, and growing essentials to help you enjoy fresh herbs all year round.

Why Grow Herbs?

Herbs are easy to grow, versatile, and packed with benefits:

Fresh flavour for home-cooked meals.

Aromatic foliage that enhances gardens and outdoor spaces.

Pollinator-friendly flowers that attract bees and butterflies.

Compact growth ideal for small gardens, pots, and windowsills.

Many herbs are hardy, drought-tolerant, and low maintenance, making them perfect for beginners. Popular culinary herbs include Basil, a tender annual with glossy green leaves and a sweet, peppery flavour. Rosemary, an evergreen shrub with needle-like leaves and a strong, woody aroma. Thyme, a low-growing, hardy perennial with small leaves and a powerful flavour, an ideal fit for borders, containers, and rock gardens.

No herb garden is complete without Mint, a fast-growing and refreshing plant, perfect for teas, desserts, and summer drinks, it does love to spread across the garden so it is best grown in containers to control any unwated spreading. Then theres Parsley, a versatile biennial herb that can be eaten fresh or cooked, we stock both curly and flat-leaf varieties, and another one of our favourites is of course, Chives, a mild onion-flavoured herb with attractive purple flowers. We have these and many more varieties of herbs available at diffrerent time of the year!

Growing Herbs Successfully

Sunlight! Most herbs thrive in full sun, requiring at least 6 hours of light per day. Some, like mint and parsley will tolerate partial shade. Herbs are happy in most soil types, but free-draining soil is essential! Add grit or sand for Mediterranean herbs such as rosemary and thyme.

Herbs prefer consistent but moderate watering, so avoid waterlogging the soil, especially for woody herbs. Herbs look fantastic in pots and containers on the patio but make sure that they provide good drainage.

Harvesting & Care Tips

Harvest little and often to encourage new growth, cut stems above leaf joints.

Avoid removing more than one-third of the plant at a time.

For best flavour, harvest in the morning after dew has dried.

Tie small bunches of herb and hang them upside down in airy room away from direct sunlight to dry them so that they can be enjoyed throughout the winter, thyme, mint and rosemary dry well in this way, (just make sure you pick them on a sunny, dry day).

Many herbs can be dried or frozen to enjoy throughout the year.

May herbs such as mint and lemon balm can be cut right down to ground level at the end of autumn to make way for fresh new growth the following spring.

Herbs for Wildlife

Herb gardens are excellent for supporting wildlife, flowering herbs such as chives, rosemary, lemon balm, sage and calendula attract bees, butterflies, and other beneficial insects! Their dense foliage provides shelter, their seeds provide food for the birds and other wildlife, and the flowers not only offer beauty and colour but also support biodiversity. Some of the best herbs to attract pollinators are lavender, borage, hyssop and marjoram.

Grow Herbs Indoors

Herbs also grow well on sunny windowsills or in greenhouses, providing fresh flavour year-round!

To begin with, you’ll need a designated area that’s uncluttered, easy to access for watering, and receives consistent sunlight, a sunny windowsill is good for this. Choose pots that have enough drainage holes and place a saucer underneath to prevent damage to your windowsill.

When growing herbs indoors in pots, small starter plants can be placed together in a wide or long container or planted individually in pots that are at least 6 inches wide.

If you’re plating from seed, they can be sown in smaller containers and relocated to their final pots once they reach around 2–4 inches tall.
