As the chill of late November sweeps across the UK, communities nationwide come together to celebrate National Tree Week, the country’s largest annual tree celebration, organised by The Tree Council. This event kick-starts the winter tree-planting season and invites us all to play a role in shaping a greener future.

This year, National Tree Week runs from Saturday 23rd November to Sunday 1st December. It’s a time to plant, nurture, and celebrate the trees that enrich our landscapes, enhance biodiversity, and help combat climate change. At Root One we have everything you need to get planting your chosen tree, from gloves, spades to compost, and a wide variety of beautiful trees including fruit trees and ornamental trees such as acers and gingko.

There are so many reasons to plant trees, here we share just a few:

Trees absorb carbon dioxide, produce oxygen, and improve air quality,  their roots prevent soil erosion, and their canopies cool urban areas, making them essential for combatting the effects of climate change.

Trees and hedgerows provide shelter and food for countless species of birds, insects, and mammals, planting native species can boost local biodiversity and create thriving ecosystems.

Spending time around trees and in green spaces can reduce stress, enhance mood, and improve overall health,  whether walking in a park or planting a tree, connecting with nature is deeply restorative.

How to Get Involved

Plant a Tree

National Tree Week is the perfect time to grab a spade and get planting. Download The Tree Council’s step-by-step guide to learn how to plant trees and hedges effectively. Whether in your garden, allotment, or community space, planting even one tree contributes to the planet’s health.

It’s the Perfect Time to Plant Trees

Autumn is an excellent time to plant trees because the cooler temperatures and increased rainfall create ideal conditions for root development. During this season, the soil retains warmth from the summer, encouraging roots to establish before the ground freezes in winter. Trees planted in autumn experience less stress from heat and drought compared to those planted in summer, allowing them to focus on root growth rather than sustaining foliage. Dormant trees require less water and energy, making the transition to their new environment smoother, by the time spring arrives, these trees are well-rooted and ready to thrive with the burst of new growth.

We have a wide variety of trees and shrubs including:

 Fruit Trees

Apple, pear, and cherry trees that are not only beautiful but also provide delicious harvests.

Hedgerows

Ideal for creating natural borders, hedgerows also attract wildlife and add visual charm. Suited to this are the likes of hawthorn, beech, blackthorn and hazel.

Ornamental Trees

Perfect for small gardens or pots, these trees add character and a touch of elegance, come and explore our plant area and you’ll find some lovely as acers, cercis, gingko, and so much more!

Shade and Shelter

Taller trees provide a cooling canopy for ground-level plants that thrive in shaded conditions, such as silver birch, or tilia.

Host a Tree Party

If planting isn’t an option, consider hosting a Tree Party! Invite family, friends, or your community to celebrate trees with activities, games, and discussions about their importance. Head over to The Tree Council website for offers and ideas to help you throw a fun and meaningful event.

Every tree planted during National Tree Week becomes a part of the legacy we leave for future generations. From fruit-bearing species that provide food to majestic oaks that stand for centuries, each tree contributes to a healthier planet and a more connected community.
